Lesson 2
Placing blocks in a quilt
layout!
In this lesson we will learn
how to put the 2 blocks from Lesson one in a quilt layout. We will do a layout
with sashing, without sashing, and with borders.
Open your file, at the top,
click on Worktable, and then click on Work on Quilt.
At the top click on Quilt,
then New Quilt, then on Horizontal. You should now have a layout on your board.
The layout shows sashing and
one border. At the bottom of your board, click on the Layout tab. A window
opens up. With this we can set the number of blocks across and sown that will
be in the quilt. Change the
You can use your tab key on
your keyboard to move from one box to another.
Set the size of the blocks to
read 12 X 12. You do not have to do the 0’s, just type the number 12.
The sashing with and height
is set for one inch, change this to read 1.5 inches in each box.
Now click on the Border tab
at the bottom. This will close the layout window and open a new window. With
this box, we will set the number of borders for the quilt, the type of corners
for the border and the size of the borders.
For the border style, click
the little arrow and a drop down menu appears. You can scroll down to se all
the different types of borders you can have. We are going to leave this one set
at mitered.
Under Adjust Size, check the
box that says ‘All’ if it is not already checked.
It now shows the border to be
1 inch, change this to read 1.5 in each of the 4 boxes.
You’re doing great! We are
now going to add a second border. At the top of the small box, click the word
ADD.
EQ
has now added a second border to your quilt layout. It also shows the second
border to be set for 1 inch, change all 4 boxes to read 2 inches.

Good Job!!!!
We will now “set” our 2
blocks in the quilt layout.
At the bottom of your board,
click Layer 1.
On the right side of your
board you will see a set of boxes with different things on them. You can hold
your cursor over each box and it will tell what that box is called. Now, I could
take the time to explain how each of these are used
but I’m not going to. I think the best way to learn about them is to use them.
During our lessons we will learn to use each one of them and even add more to
the list.
OK, back to our quilt --- we
are now ready to ‘set’ our blocks.
Find the set tool, which is
the 4th one down and click on it. A small window will appear on your
board showing the 2 blocks you colored.
Click on the Ohio Star block
Move your cursor to the first
empty block at the top left corner and click. You have now placed the Ohio Star
in the quilt.

I want you to place the OS
(Ohio Star) block in each square on the layout----wait---there is a short cut
for this.
Put your curse back over the
first block you set, look on your keyboard and find your key marked “Ctrl”
(Control), hold it down and at the same time click your OH block. You should
now have OS’s in every square on your quilt. Good!

Let’s add the FS (Friendship
Star) in every other square.
Click on the FS in the little
box. Look on your keyboard and find the key marked “Alt”. Hold it down and at
the same time click the second box on the first row. (Right on top of the
existing OS block) You now have alternating blocks in your layout! Cool isn’t
it?
Click Quilt above and then
click save quilt in Sketchbook.

Let’s color the sashing and
borders.
Click the paintbrush on the right hand side of
your board. Your Fabric window will open. Find a color you want to use for your
sashing and click on it. Hold the control key down and click anywhere on the
sashing. Half of your sashing is colored, now click an uncolored part, still
holding the control key down and the rest of your sashing is colored.

Choose a color for your
corner stones and color them using the control key.

To color the inner border,
choose a color, hold down the ctrl key and click the border, do the same for
the outer border.
Your entire quilt should now
be colored. Save in Sketchbook.

We are going to learn one
more thing here today.
With you quilt still open,
click on the Layout tab at the bottom of your board. In the window that opened,
where it says ‘Sashing’ put zero’s in both boxes. Click the ‘Layer 1’ tab again
and your sashing is gone.

Notes:
1. If you want to color
different parts of your quilt separately, then do not use the Ctrl key. After
you have chosen your color, click on the places where you want that color to
be.
2. If you make a mistake and
set a color in the wrong place, click Edit, then click undo color patch and it
will remove the last color patch you added. You can do this removal several
times if you have set more than one in the wrong place.
3. If you decide you want to
change the colors on one of the blocks, say the OS, then choose your color,
hold down the Ctrl key and click on just one section of one of the blocks, this
will change the color in all of the blocks, continue coloring that one block
till you have it colored the way you want. All of the OS blocks will be the
same as the single one you colored.
4. Again, if you want each
block to be different; do not use the Ctrl key.
5. You can change the sashing
colors, corner stone colors, and border colors just be clicking a new color
over them.
6. You can go back to the
Layout and Border Tabs and change the sizes to what ever you want.
7. You can also change the
layout of your quilt to more blocks, but you will have to add the extra blocks
after you make it bigger.
8. You can make your quilt
layout smaller also.
Try doing 2 or three color
variations of this quilt and save them in the sketchbook.
If you click on view at the
top of your board, then click on Sketchbook, you can click on the block tab and
it will show your blocks. Click on the Quilts tab and it will show your quilts
you made.
HOMEWORK
Yes, there’s homework!
I would like for each of you
to combine lessons 1 and 2 by picking different blocks from the EQ Block
Library, coloring them and placing them in different quilt layouts.
Lesson 3
We will actually “DRAW” a block!!!!!
