Lesson 3
In this lesson we will be
drawing a block.
I like to set my board up in
a grid so it’s easier to draw blocks. For example if you are doing the 9 patch,
then it is drawn on a grid of 3 X 3, a Square in a square is 4 X 4, and a Log
Cabin on 8 X 8. The easiest way to figure out the grid is to look at the block
and ‘see’ the sections in it. If the block is square the grid will be the same
across and down.
The block below is a 4 X 4
grid. It is Square in a Square.

You’ll
learn more about this as we go along.
For our first drawing lesson
we will draw an easy block; Shoo Fly!
Let’s set up our drawing
board:
1.
click on Block
2.
click new block
3.
click easy draw
4.
Click on block
again
5.
on the general
tab, set the ‘snap to grid points’ at 6
6.
Block size should
read 12 in both boxes
7.
Click the graph
Paper tab
8.
under number of
divisions set both boxes at 3
9.
click OK
If
you did the basic set up that was posted, the rest of the tabs should be set
correctly.
Over
on the right hand side of your board are your tools.
Your
board should look like this.

Click the tool that looks
like a pencil. I want you to ‘draw’ the two lines that go across and the two
lines that go down. Your lines must touch the outside of the main block. If
they do not, the line will be lost. On the first line across, put your pencil
right on the outside line at the number 4 click and hold and pull the pencil
across to the other side, when you reach the outside line release your click.
Did you notice that if you did not let go of your line right where it was
suppose to be that it “snapped” into position? This is why we set the snap to
grid point, so you can be a little off and it will still go where it’s suppose
to be.
Now draw the other 3 lines,
and save in the sketchbook.
I want you to refresh your
board….to do this, look at the tools on the left side of your board, find the
one close to the bottom that looks like an equal (=) sign. Click the =, your
board has been refreshed.
Your board should look like
this:

We will now divide the 4
corner square into HST (half square triangles)
1.
place your pencil on the #4 on the left side of your board
click and hold, pull your pencil up to the to where the # 4 is. Drop your line.
The first square should be divided from the bottom left corner to the top right
corner.

Now
do the other three corners to look like this:

You’re
doing great!
Save
your block in the sketchbook.
Refresh
your board (=) Are all your lines still there?
If
not, re-draw them, save and refresh.
Color
your shoo Fly and save in your sketchbook.

I
want you to send me your Shoo Fly block.
To
Export your picture:
1.
Click on file
2.
Scroll down and
click on Export Snapshot
3.
Move your cursor
over your block and you will see a small circle with a cross in it.
4.
Put this circle
at the top left hand corner, click and hold.
5.
Pull the little
circle diagonally down to the bottom right hand corner, release your click. As
you moved the circle down you would have seen dotted lines move across the top
and down the side enclosing your block.
6.
If you dropped
your circle, go back to step 2 and start over.
7.
A small window
should have appeared on your board.
8.
Click the disc
that says save as bitmap file
9.
A new window
opens, the first box says ‘Save in’ I save mine in “My Pictures” you save yours
where ever you save your pictures.
10.
In the file Name
box, type Shoo Fly, click save
11.
Go to where ever
you save your block picture, edit it from Bitmap to a jpg and email to me at:
Notes:
When
I want to edit a picture I have saved in “My Pictures” I find the picture,
right click on it, and then click the word edit. A new box opens with the
picture in it. Click File, click save as, another box opens with the file name
already in it, but change the file type from bitmap to jpg. Click save.
You
can now email the picture.
Remember,
if you do not understand something I have said, or how something is done, post
on the MB or you can IM me and I will walk you thru it. If you have a mike, you
can call me on Yahoo IM and we can talk to each other in real voice!!!!
