Lesson 5

Circling of the Geese

In this lesson we will draw flying geese in a circle. But we will draw only ¼ of the circle and then clone.

NOTE:  When drawing your arcs, if the arc happens to arc the wrong direction, hit your space bar one time while drawing the arc and it will flip the other direction.

Open your file

Click block, new block, easy draw

Click block, drawing board set-up

Under the General tab, turn on and set both boxes at 24, set size of block at 6

Under Graph paper tab, set number of divisions at 6 in both boxes.

Under the Easy Draw tab, check the box for Snap to Grid

Good job; now let’s draw one fourth of our flying geese.

1.    Click on the line tool and draw a horizontal line from left to right at the 3 inch mark.

2.    Draw a vertical line from the 3 inch mark from the top to the bottom.  You now have your board divided into 4 equals sections.

3.    Click on the “ARC” tool. This tool is directly under the line tool, the pencil has half a circle under it.

4.    We will be drawing in the upper left section on your board, and then cloning.

5.    I want you to draw from right to left on these arcs. Look closely at your graph paper, can you see the little tiny dots, these dots are a quarter inch apart in all directions. Starting on the center line, ¼ inch down from the top, click and hold, draw toward the left and down to the horizontal line. Drop your arc one quarter inch in on this line. Your board should look like this. Save/=

6.    Let’s draw the second arc. Again draw from right to left. Begin the second arc 1.5 inches down on the center vertical line and draw to the left and down to the 1.5 in mark on the horizontal line. Drop the arc. Save/=

Your board now looks like this.

We are now going to add some nodes along the drawn arcs so that the lines for the geese can be equally divided.

7.    Find your EDIT TOOL; this is the fourth one down on the right side, just under the arc tool. Click on the little black square, a Small box will open and in the first little box, beside partition put the number 4. Click on one of the arcs in your drawing then click the word Partition. 3 small nodes should appear on your arc. Now repeat this on the other arc.

8.    Click on the line tool (pencil) and draw lines to intersect the nodes as shown below.

Excellent! Save and =

9.    We are going to add nodes to the center of the straight for the points of the geese. Be sure and do the line at the end of the arc. Click on the Edit tool, and then click on one of the straight lines. Now click on the little black square on the edit tool. Click the word HALF in the little Edit Line box. Click the straight line. You should now have a node in the center of that line. Repeat with the other 3 lines. Your board should now look like this.

Notice the section on the vertical line also has a node on it.

10.                       Click on the line tool

11.                       Turn off “Snap to grid” This is the 6th button down on the right. It should be ‘up’ to be off.

12.                       Starting at the first node on the horizontal line on the left, draw a line from that node to the center node on the line above. Then draw a second line from the center node back down to the other node on the horizontal line.   See picture below.

13.                       Repeat this for all the nodes; you should have 4 geese when finished.

Your doing good, Sorry I couldn’t explain these steps better but perhaps the pictures help with what I am trying to say.

Save and =

Take a break and go to view and clean up your sketchbook getting rid of all the extras drawings you no longer need. Remember; do not delete the last drawing.

14.                       Turn ‘snap to grid’ back on.

We are now going to clone this section first using 90 degrees and second at 180 degrees in order to make a complete circle of flying geese.

15.                       We are going to do our cloning just a little bit different this time. I want you to learn both ways cloning can be done.

Click on the small black square in the corner of the Select Tool to open the Symmetry box.

16.                       Using your cursor, point to just above the top left corner, hold, and drag a box to just past the section we have been working on. Do not do the whole block. Drop your box.

17.                       We need to remove a few of our lines, hold down the shift key and click on one of the lines that are NOT part of your flying geese. The line should have deleted. There are 4 lines that should be deleted, the 2 longer lines from the center both up and across. Also the 2 short lines at the top and side which connect the outside square to the largest arc. Do not delete any line which is actually part of the geese.

18.                       On the Symmetry box, click clone and then click rot 90. Pick up the cloned section and move it to the right and line up the arcs, matching the nodes perfectly. Drop

19.                       Using your curser start at the top left corner again, draw another box that will enclose the entire upper half of the geese.

20.                       Hold shift key down and remove the center lines that are not part of the geese.

21.                       Click clone, then click Rot 180

22.                       Move the clone down to the bottom half of your board, lining up the nodes and lines. Drop Save and =

You have now made a circle of flying geese.

Congratulations!!!!  Color and Save

OK, so now you know how to draw a circle of geese, how about doing one with more that one circle of geese?
